The Talent Crunch

This happens, and this sucks! If you’re a start-up & you’re using one of those cutting-edge technologies in your start-up, about which people only hear or read on the web, you’ll end-up explaining, explain a lot.

Most of the startups these days seem to be working on either Web 2.0 or Socializing their application & services. If you ask about the developer base for this platforms, it is much smaller than demand. I’ve been on both ends of the phone in calling up people looking for such talent and on the receiving end of calls with people asking if I know of people who are available for hire.

Inflation was defined as “Too much money chasing too few goods” and that principle more than applies here.

The issue with freshers these days seem to be:

  • Lack of Knowledge
  • Lack of Programming & Design habits
  • The risk involved in hiring a blank slate

The good part in all this talent crunch is the availability of languages & designing that are easier to learn. Imagine explaining “pointers” to someone over a weekend. Ahem!
