How to quit your job in the middle of Global Financial Crunch!

Crunch! In last whole month, I’m hearing & reading lot about the Global Credit Crunch we’re having in our planet. I’m seeing people relating this crisis to each & everything which matters & even not matter at all. That is really crap!

I seriously hate when people directly relate technology with this crunch and then directly target India like this is the slowdown of Indian Technology Ecosystem; and it is more frustrating when many Indians itself support this crap-talk! My question why people act so blindly like our nation is all about off-shoring, why don’t they see the innovation. Surely, a large part of our technology ecosystem is based on outsourcing, But that is not the only thing that defines the system, there is major part of innovation which is driven from small start-ups incubating to large enterprises, there is innovation driven by small technologists like us, there is innovation driven by the most talented pool of minds in whole world we have.

Let’s take a typical Bangalore scenario. Out of city’s 5.8 million population almost 1.6 million people work here for technology. And, you may be one of them. Let me be very specific here… You work for “technology”; you do not work for your big IT company. Give a big hug to Big Uncles that your piece of job which you thought you were working for your Big IT company, might be part of lay-off movement. You never know. And, you’ve seen it too that corporate-culture sucks. Especially in remotely controlled technology ecosystem like ours. This really sucks!

Crunch like these works typically as a fuel to more technological innovation. 8 years ago we’ve seen when the bubble burst during the start of this century. That was a similar situation, though the center that time was the world wide web, this time the center is the Wall-Street & Markets around the world. For example, Take a look at Google, CISCO, Mozilla, WebMD all these companies started right in the middle of the bubble’s burst, all are valued over a billion dollar companies today.

Let’s talk about the tech now… Look closely, technology is anywhere & everywhere. It is wheel that drives innovation. Finance, Money etc is definitely an essential part of the system which is build by technology. But look separately, technology alone always keeps moving, it is completely a different matter that large tech companies are in crisis now, because we’ve really fucked-up the whole planet-wide financial system! Both are part of same system, but specifically both are different things. That is why I called you you work for “technology”… So be proud that you work for technology, not for your company! You’re a free bird!

Recently, I heard Barack Obama saying (via Krishna’s Blog)…

Bigness of purpose is what separates 20th century and 21st century organizations: Yesterday, we built huge corporations to do tiny, incremental things - Tomorrow, we must build small organizations that can do tremendously massive things…

He’s is 99% correct in recognizing the patterns here. I’m just hoping they do not fuck the system again, like they did.

Definitely, this is a major shift we’re witnessing. The trend is changing, this is a new era when new frontiers in technology / technology enabled systems will come up and redefine the system. And, we (India) have a major role to play… remember, you work for technology!

I will just finish this post with lines below…

  • Get involved » more coffee » quit your job » start a company » crunch blooms entrepreneurship…
  • We all have ideas. Those ideas, by themselves are worthless unless you enterprise them…
  • It takes a lot to jump-in to entrepreneurship, but trust me. It is even better than orgasm!
  • And, your twenties are time to take risks & it is a roller coaster ride…
  • And, lastly… This is the best time to quit your job & start something you always dreamed about…

PS: I’m already an entrepreneur… I’m having my cup of coffee full. So, I was just sharing some thoughts ignited by coffee here ;)

Crunch 2.0

Crunch 2.0 Hiring, It surely a hard thing for start-ups! In a start-up, what you have is a small team, limited resources which you have to convert to something good & big with the time; and the time flies like that Jet in the sky! Entreprenuership is hard because of involved unpredictbility, this unpredictibility makes it risky affair for many people out there.

Most of my friends work in technology-fims all across the town. I often meet people, lot of people who always say that apart from their regular work they want to start something of their own, some of them are pretty tuned with their “what they’re doing” in their office, most of them don’t have to do anything seriously with their “whatever they’re doing”, they’re just used to the system,  they’re just happy with whatever they’re earning as their salary at the end of month. Last couple of months most people whom I met reply… “I am on the bench dude! No work at all… I want to do something extra, but you know the tubeligh is not bulbing!”

Rediculous senseless chain-mails & FWD mails are their mode of communication. For example, my former room mates… every night when I used to see them, they were still discussing about the shitty chain-mails they have… some of them only do this stuff and pass the whole day! Sure, they might have good skills and they can actually code… they looked like programmed monkeys by the corporate culture! May be this is state of all talent-pool we have in the Indian tech-industry; most of them are used to the system.

That sucks, sucks really big time!

Do you love what you are doing?

image Be it Guy Kawasaki or be it Paul Graham or be it Steve Jobs - every pundit swears by the mantra that you should do what you love. If you do not enjoy what you are doing, there are very few chances that you will be successful in it.

So, here’s a question for those of you reading this post -

  • How many of you actually love what you are doing ?
  • If not, are you doing anything to change that ?

Feel free to leave your responses via anonymous comments. It would be great to get a feel of how many of you are actually pursuing your passion, whatever that might be…

The theory of 80:20 perfect applies to Indian Tech  Industry… my good friend Amit Darda defines the 80:20 theory as…

Almost all working people in corporate world must have heard about this. but still today no body is serious about this and day by day this ratio is increasing.

80:20 means it is a ratio of non working employee vs working employee. In almost all the offices in world only 20% of employee do work and 80% enjoys. Today with the new work culture, I feel this ratio is increasing as most of the employees don’t want to work. They just want big money for small work.

I seen many such cases and they are so lucky that even they get the places like this.

Often, people don’t find any enjoyment in the work… they are usually a part of a project & some other major stuff like that where there are 60 or 100 people like them are working for the same thing, thing which they might called an MNC project for some big-fish MNC client… and things which they miss are Recognition, India & Satisfaction. Personally, when I was working for my last company, though it was a midsize product company I was pretty aware of all these things. And, at start of my career this was the main reason I did not accepted offers from services companies in the town, though they were offering me much more than what I started with at my last company, but I was mainly looking for quality of work, team & recognition of things/work I do. I started-off as a freelancer in my college days, then the company I joined-in after college was pretty entrepreneurial. That helped me expanding my vision.

Nothing special about this post, It is not like that I’m not liking what I am doing… I’m loving what I am doing & I always love what I do…

This is just a post to see what you people think around about what you are doing rightnow…? Usually, I come across many people, many friends of mine… Even if they’re not doing anything they are pretty happy, and they pretend to be happy earning money for doing nothing in their office space, but sitting & googling & FWDing mails to their gangs, This is what we define as “typical employee minded”. Sitting & passing the month in the cube, almost doing nothing…  95% people I meet or know  are working for IT companies in the town and they are either not happy with their current work, boss or manager or looking for a change. Especially in the Indian Tech Industry, which is purely a service industry in our country… You must be familiar with terms like “sitting on the bench”… and stuff like that, So…

My question is why to sit if you can walk, you can do & most of all, you can think…?
